With the longer days and warmer weather, we decided to do a company outing. So we tested our bodies and jumped into a 5km Fun Run, raising awareness for Bowel cancer and Dorothy House hospice.
Arriving with Angst
Race morning was upon us. The team met early on Sunday morning at the City of Bath Park and Ride to catch the Race Shuttle Bus. The sun was shining and we felt lady luck on our side as we took in the sights of the beautiful City of Bath on the 10 minute journey to the start line. What a perfect day for a 5k!
In this Together
As the collection of runners grew, our group assembled near the starting field with a few feeling hesitant about how well they would perform. A cheerful, positive spirit soon replaced the self-doubt, as we reassured each other that we were “all in this together” …but as expected there were some definite glimmers of competitiveness amongst the runners in our group…..
Family and friends of Benj Millard, the young man whose treatment we were raising money for, arrived with smiles and gave us all a confidence boost. Other supporters spoke kind words of encouragement and were ready to cheer us on along the 5km distance. An amazing network of support helped us raise £715 for Dorothy House Hospice and we kept this in our minds as we prepared ourselves for the journey ahead.
On Your Marks…
Ten minutes of warming up (aerobic style, something foreign to many of us) soon highlighted the need for pure determination. After a quick race debrief and exchanges of good luck, the klaxon sounded and the group set off.
Get Set, Go!
The first field saw people finding their own pace, some chose to jog, others were happy walking and a few sprinted ahead. Wayne, the Director of Freshlook, took a very nasty fall at the painful expense of his ankle during the start of the route, but he continued to run on! One of our welders, Guy, had been working the previous evening and was doubtful about finishing, but managed to keep up a good speed with Head of Purchasing, Simon. Brian, Director of Etavoni Ltd & Freshlook, and one of Freshlook’s fabricators, Jordan, ran ahead like mad men as if they has done this many times before (even though Jordan had proclaimed that he would be walking the race!).
The Longest Yard
The pace was set and competitive mind-sets took over. The cycle path was very busy with other runners and cyclists but the team ran on in a focused state. After 3 miles of endurance and determination, the finish line finally came into sight. The last stretch had everyone flying through the finish line, with a great sense of relief, especially Etavoni’s Purchasing Assistant, Lewis, who is still recovering from a broken ankle and surgery!
Over Achievers at the Finish Line
Each and every team member was happy with their time, some were pleasantly surprised and everyone received a well-deserved Relish Running medal. We caught our breath and took off for a post-run treat at a local pub, in high spirits. A lot of the runners were so pleased with their time that we are already thinking about attending another run this year! Watch this space…
With company contributions, a grand total of £1,900.49 has been raised for Dorothy House Hospice!
We are so grateful for everyone who helped us raise money. A MASSIVE thank you to all the team who got involved and made this happen. If you would like to donate, our JustGiving page is still open.
